The Challenge

Connecting IoT Smart Fridges to a Scalable Mobile Experience

GUS Foods provides offices with 24/7 access to fresh food and beverages through IoT-enabled smart fridges deployed across workplaces. To further improve customer experience, the company aimed to develop a native mobile application that would extend functionality beyond the physical fridge interface.

The new application needed to:

Streamline customer onboarding
Support multiple payment methods
Integrate securely with smart fridge hardware
Connect seamlessly with backend APIs
Operate reliably across distributed fridge locations

Because the system combined mobile applications, hardware components, and backend services, coordination across teams and systems was critical. GUS Foods required a development partner capable of handling full-stack mobile delivery and IoT integration.

Cyrex designed and developed a native mobile application for both iOS and Android platforms, enabling customers to interact with GUS Foods’ smart fridge ecosystem directly from their devices.

The engagement followed a structured, three-stage approach.

1. Technical Audit & Evaluation

Cyrex began by evaluating the existing ecosystem:

Auditing current backend APIs
Reviewing integration methods
Assessing hardware communication mechanisms

This audit provided a clear understanding of architectural constraints and optimization opportunities.

2. API Standardization & Implementation Support

Based on the findings, Cyrex developed a tailored API guide aligned with industry best practices while respecting GUS Foods’ operational preferences.

This included:

Refining API contracts
Validating updated integrations
Conducting security testing on communication flows
Ensuring stable interactions between mobile app, backend, and hardware

By aligning API standards early, Cyrex reduced integration friction across teams.

3. Testing, Monitoring & Deployment

To support long-term scalability, Cyrex simplified testing and monitoring workflows for the updated architecture.

A key logistical challenge was the distributed nature of the hardware. Fridges were located across Belgium, requiring:

On-premise testing using shipped hardware components
Coordination between hardware and API teams
Validation of performance in production environments

After a successful initial launch, the system was expanded to support multiple fridges without operational disruption.
